6-Inch Pipe Bursts In Mid-City Neighborhood

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Crews repaired a ruptured water main Monday that flooded a Mid-City neighborhood.

Around 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, workers were sent to the 4800 block of St. Charles Place, near Rimpau Boulevard, for report of a broken pipe, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

Upon their arrival, crews located a 6-inch pipe that burst in the area. Water was shut off in the immediate area.

Water was restored to 50 customers Monday morning.

Neighbors say they've been subjected to several water main breaks in the past.

LADWP says that section of Mid-City is not a problem area, but say they are racing the clock when it comes to the city's aging pipe infrastructure.

LADWP has proposed a rate increase that would allow them to double the amount of pipes they replace annually. This year, they're on track to replace 26 miles of pipes. The agency wants to raise rates by $5 each year, over the next five years, to bring in $1 billion to replace decaying infrastructure.

Residents who want to learn more about this issue can attend a LADWP town hall meeting Tuesday in Glassell Park. More information is available here.
