Gardeners Advised To Prepare For Strong El Niño Storms

TORRANCE (CBSLA.com) — As Southern Californians brace for winter storms and a strong El Niño, gardeners are being told to prepare their lawns.

Nanciann Voepel, who works at Armstrong Garden Center in Torrance, said there are a few things gardeners can do to protect their plants.

For one, buying larger plants is recommended, so that they are less likely to wash away with heavy rains. With that in mind, plants with large root systems are desirable.

Another strategy is to place a porous netting on top of the soil and create holes for plants. That could help stabilize soil.

Finally, don't neglect your trees. Keep them pruned to avoid creating large amounts of debris.
