2 Children Injured, 1 Critically, After Woman Slams SUV Into Utility Pole In Palmdale

PALMDALE (CBSLA.com)  —  Authorities said two children were injured, one critically, when the SUV they were driving in crashed into a utility pole Saturday morning in Palmdale.

Officials said a 6-year-old boy suffered major injuries and an 11-year-old girl was moderately injured in the accident. In addition,the driver, 26-year-old Vanessa Byrd, received minor injuries in the crash.

The accident was reported just before 10:45  a.m. at 170th Street East and Palmdale Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 1999 Ford Expedition was eastbound on Palmdale Boulevard just west of 170th Street East, said CHP Officer D. Helfrich.

"For reasons unknown, the driver applied the brakes to the 1999 Ford Expedition causing (it) to travel out of control, Helfrich said.

The boy was airlifted to Children's Hospital Los Angeles along with Davion Sykes, a 23-year-old  passenger who was not injured, the officer said.

The girl and Byrd were taken by ground ambulance to Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, Helfrich said.

"Alcohol is not suspected to be a contributing factor in the cause of this collision," the officer said.

The investigation was ongoing.
