5-Foot Python Found Abandoned In Fontana Dumpster

FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — Police investigated Thursday the discovery of a 5-foot python left inside a dumpster.

Animal services officers were called out at about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to investigate a report of a python in an aquarium in a dumpster in the 16900 block of Reed Street, police officials said.

When officers arrived, they rescued the python and found it unresponsive and very cold to the touch.

"I knew the snake needed warmth as soon as possible," Animal Services Supervisor Jamie Simmons said in a statement. "I wrapped a warm towel around the snake and kept it in the office where the animal services team took turns keeping warm. Reptiles can die from exposure to extreme colds. After an hour the snake responded well to the warmth."

The snake was taken to Western Riverside Animal Shelter.

Animal services officials say the python will not be made available for adoption and will instead be handed over to a rescue specializing in exotic animals.

Anyone with information about this incident can call (909) 356-TIPS (8477).
