Deputy Killed, Woman Injured In Santa Clarita Crash

SANTA CLARITA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities investigated a traffic collision Thursday that killed a 31-year-old deputy and injured a woman in Santa Clarita.

The incident unfolded around 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, when a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy was on his way home from work, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities were sent to the intersection of San Francisquito Canyon and Stator Lane for report of a traffic collision.

Upon their arrival, California Highway Patrol officers learned a 2014 Ford Flex and a 2012 Honda CR-V were involved in the crash.

Paramedics transported two victims to Henry Mayo Hospital for treatment of major injuries.

According to CHP officers, the deputy was pronounced dead at the hospital. The victim's identity is being withheld pending family notification.

An update on the woman's condition was not immediately available.

A preliminary investigation revealed the deputy lost control of his Honda for an unknown reason and partially crossed over the solid painted double yellow parallel lines.

The Honda subsequently struck the Ford in oncoming traffic.

Authorities said the deputy was not wearing his seat belt.

Alcohol and or drugs have not been suspected to be a factor in the crash, officers said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
