What Does $1,500 A Month Get You In WeHo? A Furnished Garage

WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — At first glance, a West Hollywood pad advertised on Craigslist seemed to offer quite a bit for $1,500 a month.

The ad boasted of the apartment's "amazing location," new appliances, "cozy kitchen nook" and new bathroom. The place even had a washer and dryer.

The only catch?

At closer inspection, the "studio apartment" looked a lot like a garage.

Bianca Barragan, a writer for CurbedLA, pointed out in a post last week that one of the bedroom walls appeared to be a garage door -- and that the garage door's track could even be seen in one of the photos on the ceiling above the bed.

What's more, the floors looked like the kind of polished concrete used for garage floors.

For West Hollywood residents tired of high rent, living in a garage isn't such a far-fetched idea.

"Listen, if it was $800, I would live in a garage," West Hollywood resident Nicole Goodman said.

However tempting it might be, garages can't just be converted into living spaces, said Rebecca Chan of Dilbeck Real Estate.

"It's not legal," she said. "You can rent a garage as storage space; I've seen that. But it's being rented as storage-space, not living space."

In any event, the ad was recently removed from Craigslist. It wasn't clear if the renter took it down due to the illegality or whether the space was rented to a tenant.
