Flash-Mob-Style Car Club Played Cat-And-Mouse Game With Police

PALMDALE (CBSLA.com) – A popular car club and police played a game of cat and mouse Tuesday night, when auto enthusiasts tried to stay one step ahead of law enforcement.

A flash-mob-style gathering known as "Krispy Kreme Tuesdays," which has drawn thousands of car enthusiasts to the Burbank Empire Center, has caused massive traffic congestion and nuisance in the past.

On Tuesday, Burbank police stepped out patrol at the shopping center bracing for the possibility of the meet-up outside the Krispy Kreme in the 1500 block of N. Victory Place.

Some car enthusiasts did show up. But many went to the Krispy Kreme on W. Rancho Vista Boulevard in Palmdale instead for the last gathering of its kind. The event's founder said the club had to change location because of pressure from the Burbank police Department and the shopping center.

"The reaction was a little saddening because they said they would respect certain things for us to gather," event founder Jeremy Lee said. "But obviously, if we did show up, they were going to start citing and towing vehicles."

Some of the car owners in Palmdale said they came all the way from Orange County and the Inland Empire.

Organizers said "Krispy Kreme Tuesdays" is all about having fun, showing off cars, connecting with their community and eating doughnuts.

Car enthusiast Leonardo Salcedo said: "There's about 90 percent that go to these shows for the love of the cars. But there's always the 10 percent that ruin it for everybody. And that's unfortunate. A majority of the people here love their cars, and they just come to look at the cars. They are not here to cause chaos and do stupid stuff."

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, there were no major problems as of 11 p.m.

Lee said around 500 souped-up cars came through the Palmdale location. He said this was the last Krispy Kreme Tuesdays and is starting another event called Octane Festival, which he said will not take place in Burbank.
