Man Charged With Setting Massive Da Vinci Apartment Fire Expected To Appear In Court

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 56-year-old man accused of setting a massive fire at a downtown Los Angeles apartment complex is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

Dawud Abdulwali has been charged with setting fire to the 1.3 million-square-foot Da Vinci apartments on Dec. 8, 2014, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

According to investigators, Abdulwali allegedly used accelerant on the fourth floor of the building, located in the 900 block of West Temple Street, which was under construction at the time.

An estimated $90 million in damage was done to the seven-story apartment complex.

The blaze also damaged a nearby high-rise along with a portion of the 110 Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

If convicted, Abdulwali faces 10 years to life in state prison.

He has been scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. in downtown Los Angeles.
