Santa Ana Police Search For Person Of Interest In Deadly Hit-And-Run Crash

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com)  —  Police in Santa Ana were on the hunt Friday for a person of interest in a deadly hit-and-run crash.

Authorities identified the person of interest as Alejandro Rivas, 20.

The accident claimed the life of a tree trimmer who was picking up orange traffic cones at the intersection of 17th Street and Fairview Street when he was fatally struck Friday just before 1:25 p.m.. The victim was reportedly thrown 50 feet on impact.

Police said the driver of the vehicle fled without stopping or rendering aid to the victim.

The unidentified victim was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Officials said the car broke down about three blocks from the crime scene, where a driver and passenger both fled on foot.

Police said they are looking for both driver and passenger. Rivas is believed to be the driver.

Rivas is an Orange resident, and police said he was on probation for multiple felonies.

The victim was 25-year-old Augustin Sosa of Orange, who was reportedly the father of a 10-year-old girl. Friday was his second anniversary on the job.
