Family Of Rialto Man Hit By Police Cruiser Speaks Out

RIALTO (CBSLA.com) — The family of a young man, who remains on life support Monday after being hit by a Rialto police cruiser, said they are devastated.

The police car struck Anthony Flores Camacho, 19, at the intersection of Cactus Avenue at Rosewood Street around 9 p.m. Sunday.

Police said Camacho was transported to a local hospital with no brain activity and is not expected to survive.

Camacho's sister said her brother's condition is dire. "My little sister called and said he's not responding to anyone's voice or nothing," Kathy Cardenas said.

"He was actually about to go to the military. He came over just to spend the last weekend with us before he left," she said.

Camacho graduated from high school this year. His family said he loved playing football.

The victim's brother-in-law, Michael Gonzales, said they were crossing the street when Camacho was hit. "Looked both ways and didn't see nothing. So we proceeded to walk. The cop car just wham, swipes him out," Gonzales said.

He claimed the officer was speeding. But Rialto police said their preliminary investigation shows the officer was going the speed limit while responding to a call. Investigators said the officer did not have his lights and sirens on.

Police said Camacho was jaywalking and alcohol may have been a factor.

The officer involved is on voluntary leave. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the case.
