Caltech Among U.S. News & World Report's Top 10 Universities

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Caltech was the sole Southern California university to be among U.S. News & World Report's top 10 schools, according to the magazine's annual rankings that were released Wednesday.

The publication listed Princeton University as the best university in the nation, followed by Harvard and Yale. Columbia, Stanford and the University of Chicago tied for 4th, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Duke, the University of Pennsylvania and, tied at 10th, Caltech and Johns Hopkins.

LA's two big campuses – UCLA and USC – tied at No. 23 with Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. UCLA ranked at 23 last year, tied with the University of Virginia, while USC actually moved up in ranking from last year, after being tied at 25 with Carnegie-Mellon.

University of California campuses occupied six spots in the top 50 rankings, with UC Berkeley at 20, UC Santa Barbara tied at 37 with Case Western Reserve of Ohio, UC Irvine and UC San Diego tied at 39 and UC Davis tied for 41 with five other universities.

UC Berkeley is also listed as the top public university in the nation, and UCLA is second, followed by the University of Virginia, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In a separate list, five schools in the Claremont Colleges Consortium are ranked among the top 40 liberal arts colleges in the nation.
