Long Beach Man Dies In Police Custody

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A man 47-year-old man suspected of being under the influence of drugs died in police custody in Long Beach on Saturday after officers used force to detain him, authorities said. The man was identified on Sunday as Manuel Ornelas.

Officers were dispatched about 10:40 a.m. to the 3200 block of Ladoga Avenue on a report the suspect was acting violently, the Long Beach Police Department said.

Arriving officers used a stun gun to detain the man, who then became unresponsive.

Officers began providing life support until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived.

Firefighters transported the man to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The type of force used to detain the man was not immediately disclosed.

The man's identity was also not released.
