Key Committee Fails To Take Up California Minimum Wage Bill

SACRAMENTO (AP) — A proposal to raise California's minimum wage and tie future increases to inflation was not taken up in time by a key state legislative committee, likely stalling the effort for this year.

The Assembly Appropriations Committee did not take up SB3 by Democratic Sen. Mark Leno of San Francisco on Thursday, the last day to send bills out.

Leno's bill seeks to raise the minimum wage to $11 in 2016 and $13 in 2017, then tie it to inflation.

Committee chairman Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez, a Los Angeles Democrat, says lawmakers will review a range of alternatives, including setting regional minimum wages. Democratic Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins of San Diego says the minimum wage should be even higher.

California's minimum wage will rise from $9 to $10 an hour in 2016.
