'Jackass' Star Steve-O Charged With 5 Misdemeanors For Anti-SeaWorld Stunt

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — "Jackass" star Steve-O was charged with five misdemeanors Monday stemming from a stunt earlier this month when he climbed a construction crane in Hollywood as part of a protest against SeaWorld.

The L.A. City Attorney's Office charged Steve-O, whose legal name is Stephen Gilchrist Glover, with one count each of  creating a false emergency, use of unregistered fireworks, storing fireworks without a permit, possession of fireworks without a permit and trespassing. The actor faces more than four years in jail and up to $4,500 in fines if convicted on all five counts.

The City Attorney's Office is also seeking restitution. City prosecutors are working with the police and fire departments and the owner of the construction site to determine the exact amount, representative of the city attorney said.

Steve-O was arrested Aug. 9 after he entered a secured construction site, climbed a crane, set off a firework and dropped an inflatable Shamu toy reading "Seaworld Sucks" before climbing down, police said. The stuntman live-streamed the entire stunt online.

Steve-O had notified his millions of Twitter followers and Facebook fans the previous day that he would stage a public stunt in opposition to SeaWorld's treatment of killer whales and other sea life.

Authorities, however, were unaware of the actor's plans.

Fire crews responded around 8 p.m. that evening to 6094 W. Selma Ave. on a report of a person threatening to jump. The crews deployed air cushions beneath the crane in case a person fell from the crane.  Police blasted the stunt, calling it a massive waste of officers' and firefighters' time.

He is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
