'Super Scoopers' Return To Assist With Fire Season In LA County

VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — Two "Super Scoopers" remained housed at Van Nuys Airport on Friday in preparation for what some say could be a harsh fire season in Los Angeles County.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, the airplanes were leased from Canada for $5 million in order to hep local fire crews battle future brush fires.

While the price tag may seem extravagant, firefighters report they are actually saving money through a lease as it would cost $35 million just to purchase one aircraft.

With the ability to hold up to 1,800 gallons of water, the airplanes will assist in making water drops over fires in the area.

According to city officials, the Super Scoopers will not be permitted to fly unless skies are clear, which presents a potential problem surrounding recent interference with drones.

"Those drones have affected our fire aircraft," said Chief Daryl Osby. "That aircraft had to be landed to clear space. For those that have drones in this area, please assure that the air space is clear to allow our firefighters and our aircrafts to do their jobs and be safe."

So far, the airplanes have been recently used to control fires in Montebello, Palos Verdes and Castaic.
