Ex-LA County Sheriff's Captain To Plead Guilty In Corruption Case

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com/AP) — William Carey, the retired Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department captain whose job was to root out misconduct in the department, has agreed to plead guilty in a sweeping corruption case.

Court documents filed Thursday indicate that Carey will acknowledge he lied on the witness stand while testifying in the trial of a former deputy.

Carey has agreed to cooperate with an ongoing Justice Department investigation in return for a reduced sentence. Charges of conspiracy and obstruction of justice will be dismissed.

Carey headed the sheriff's Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau. Federal prosecutors allege that he and former Undersheriff Paul Tanaka tried to block an FBI probe into alleged abuse of county jail inmates. Tanaka has pleaded not guilty.

Overall, some two dozen department members have been charged with various crimes and about a half-dozen have been convicted.
