Committee Raising Funds To Install Granite Memorial Honoring Garfield High's Vietnam Vets

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A planned monument to honor Garfield High School's Vietnam veterans is $5,000 closer to reality Wednesday after a donation from Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis.

The school's alumni have been working with Solis and the Los Angeles Unified School District to raise the $60,000 needed to build the granite monument, which will honor all of the school's Vietnam veterans, both living and deceased.

Solis said the $5,000 donation is just a small contribution and hopes East Los Angeles businesses and community members will help match it.

Organizers are also calling on any Vietnam veterans who attended Garfield High School to get in touch so their names can also be included on the monument.
