CBS2's Gina Miller Talks Play-By-Play Sports Broadcasting Camp For Youth

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — I can't tell you how many people, ranging from young kids to CEOs who tell me they would love to have my job and be a sportscaster. The thing is, many people want a job involving sports and media but most don't want to do the work required to be successful in those industries.

A successful sports media career requires patience, knowledge and, to steal from Allen Iverson, practice. Yes, we're talking about practice.

This industry is very much a trade in which you are constantly refining your craft. That can be hard to do because very few circumstances can mimic that live television experience or deadline pressure you feel when you need to turn a story in under an hour.

Enter Play-by-Play Sports Broadcasting Camp. This brainchild of veteran sportscaster Jeremy Treatman gives aspiring sports media pros, ranging from 10-18, a jumpstart on their careers.

"There are no requirements and no prerequisites. We have varying interests of knowledge but for the most part these kids know everything about everything," Treatman told me at the UCLA camp.

He is right. While shooting this story, photographer Andre Fontanelle and I were blown away by the knowledge these kids possess. One 12-year old was rattling off soccer legend Pele accomplishments while an 11-year old opined that "Deflategate" was the most overrated story he's ever seen. You can make the case he probably hasn't seen a ton of stories in his 11-years but I agree with him.

"Sports broadcasting is kind of like a small niche," Harvard Westlake student Jake Liker told me. He's 16 going on 36, by the way, in a good way.

"The fact there's a camp across the country that we can converge together and learn super valuable skills is a big plus. It's a haven for all of us."
