School Lunch Money Embezzler Repaying Stolen Funds

RIALTO (AP) — A woman who embezzled $1.8 million in lunch money from a Southern California school district is paying it back.

Judith Oakes confessed to stealing money over eight years while serving as an accountant for the Rialto Unified School District. She was caught after surveillance cameras showed her stuffing cash into her bra.

She served 20 months in prison and was released in June.

The district's insurer covered the losses. Oakes is paying back the insurer.

The San Bernardino Sun says Oakes paid $339,000 in January and has made other payments after her release, but the county Probation Department won't say how much.

The Sun says she's only required to pay back $150 a month. At that rate, she'll be done in 836 years.
