Both Drivers Suspected Of DUI After 2-Car Crash In Santa Ana Kills Boy, 6

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a 6-year-old boy has died after  a two-car collision in Santa Ana in which both drivers are suspected of being under the influence.

Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said the crash happened shortly before 12:45 p.m. Monday at Bristol Street and St. Andrew Place, City News Service reported.

The child was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he passed away during surgery. Police identified the child as Ivan Sandoval, reported CBS2's Stacey Butler.

"It took like 10 paramedics to get him out. Extract him. The kid was nonresponsive. It was pretty heartbreaking. I shed a few tears when I saw that," said one man, who was at the scene.

Butler said Ivan was a passenger in a BMW being driven by his uncle, authorities said. Police said the child was not in a car seat.

Authorities said the child's uncle has been taken to a hospital and was in an intensive-care unit. He was expected to be arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a narcotic.

The driver of the other vehicle described as a Nissan was not at fault, according to police, but was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. That driver's mother told Butler her son has struggled to control his drinking. She said he recently got his license back and hopes now he can get help.

No further information was immediately available.
