Final Day Of Special Olympics Competition Kicks Off In Long Beach

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A half marathon that started at 8 a.m. Saturday in Long Beach kicked off the final day of competition for the 2015 Special Olympics. Many other competitions are also scheduled for other parts of Los Angeles throughout the day.

About 20 Special Olympics athletes from 15 countries were joined by 300 other runners without intellectual disabilities to run the 13 miles Saturday morning. The Special Olympics competitors included Karen Dickerson, an American athlete who ran the Boston Marathon in less than four hours.

Other events scheduled for Saturday include gymnastics, basketball, sailing and track and field competitions. Closing ceremonies are scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
