Suspect Armed With Metal Stick Fatally Shot By Deputies In Whittier

WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — Authorities investigated the circumstances surrounding a deputy-involved shooting on Thursday that took place in Whittier.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, deputies were sent to the 12000 block of Rose Hedge Drive for report of a family disturbance.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, authorities encountered a male suspect who was said to be drunk, arguing and damaging property.

Deputies said the man made a comment that he was going to bash their heads in. He then went back into the home and returned with a metal stick, which he swung at a deputy.

In response, one deputy fired his service revolver and struck the suspect in the upper torso. A second deputy fired a taser, which also struck the suspect in the same area.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification. Detectives said he was a 47-year-old Hispanic man.

One deputy was transported to a hospital for treatment of bruising and contusions to his left arm.

The investigation is ongoing.
