Man Fatally Shot Near Police Station In Westlake District

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police Tuesday investigated the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a 33-year-old man in the Westlake District.

Around 11:45 p.m. on Monday, a pair of officers were traveling in the area of 6th Street and Union Drive when a pedestrian flagged them down to report a body that was found on a sidewalk.

Police were then sent to the 400 block of South Union Drive to investigate, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Upon their arrival, officers located an adult man on a sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim's identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Police said the victim is believed to be gang-affiliated, however, it remains unclear if the shooting was gang-related.

"We're investigating it from the standpoint that it was a homicide," said Lt. Wes Buhrmester. "We believe him to be a gang member, however, we haven't verified or refuted that it was gang-related in that sense."

At this time, no suspect information is available. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Los Angeles Police Department's Rampart Division at (213) 484-3400.
