Nixon Library Announces Year-Long Renovation Closure

YORBA LINDA (CBSLA.com) — A year-long renovation closure was announced on Monday for the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum.

Officials said galleries are scheduled to close on Sept. 28 as part of a $25 million renovation project at the museum.

"The gallery renovation will bring new exhibits, updated technology, interactive displays and participatory learning opportunities to the visitor experience," said Bill Baribault, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Richard Nixon Foundation. "This making the Nixon Library a top destination for visitors not just in Southern California, but around the country."

The Watergate exhibit, which documents the president's downfall and eventual resignation, will remain unchanged since its opening in 2011.

During the renovation, the library's research room, the president's birthplace, Nixon and his wife's grave sites, the First Lady's Gardens, the Presidential Helicopter and the White House East Room will remain open.

Annual community events such as Memorial Day, Patriot's Day and Veteran's Day will still be held during the closure.

Museum officials said the renovation is being funded through private donations.

The museum is scheduled to reopen in the fall of 2016.
