Moreno Valley Deputies Fatally Shoot Man While Responding To Reported Stabbing

MORENO VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — Deputies responding to a disturbance in a commercial area of Moreno Valley fatally shot a suspect.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department says it happened shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of Perris and Sunnymead boulevards.

Deputies first responded around 3 a.m. after a caller reported a mentally ill man was creating a disturbance in the area.

When they arrived, the man attacked a deputy, who was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The man got away.

Several hours later, deputies were called back to that vicinity for a reported stabbing.

Deputies arrived to find a man at the scene and identified him as the suspect involved in the deputy assault, said Dep. Michael Vasquez of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

"The suspect was holding an unknown object, and refused to drop the item, or the object, and advanced towards officers," Vasquez said. "At that time, an officer-involved shooting occurred, and the victim succumbed to his wounds."

It's unclear if the officers involved have been suspended or put on leave.

Officials have not yet identified the suspect.
