Woman Opens Up About Effects Of GHB After Drug Is Believed To Have Played Role In Death In Venice Beach

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — A drug suspected of playing a role in the death of a woman at a Venice Beach party over the weekend is turning up more and more in the Southland.

Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, or GHB, has been known as the "date rape" drug, but some say it's now sweeping through the Hollywood party scene and is being taken for recreational use.

GHB is getting into the hands of professionals and housewives.

"It instantly made me feel completely euphoric, increased my sex drive; I just felt so at peace," said one woman, who doesn't want her identity revealed.

She explains that she became so highly addicted to GHB to the point it was ruining her life.

"To be honest, I was urinating myself. I passed out in the shower," she said. "I would wake up and not remember anything that happened."

GHB is odorless and looks like water. The woman says it gets you high fast without the side effects of a hangover like alcohol. She went to an in-patient rehabilitation center and is now working on her sobriety.

But, she says, she wants her story out there in hopes people won't even take that first sip.

"I've been through hell and back," she said. "If I can help anyone just to avoid yet another addiction, this is what I'm here for."

On Sunday, LAPD says a group of people partying at a Venice Beach house willingly took the drug resulting in one woman dying and leaving two others in critical condition.

GHB has also been known to be commonly used by professional athletes and bodybuilders.
