Turf Removal Incentive Increases To $3 Per Foot For Malibu, Rancho Palos Verdes Customers

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Water customers along the coast in cities like Malibu and Rancho Palos Verdes have more incentive to remove their lawns during this historic drought.

The West Basin Municipal Water District increased an existing $2-per-square-foot turf removal rebate to $3 per square foot for its customers, which include residents in Malibu, Rancho Palos Verdes, Carson, West Hollywood and 13 other cities.

The program, funded with a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, will be available for a limited time. The federal grant is expected to cover the removal of 10 acres of lawns and save 20 million gallons of drinking water each year, according to the water district.

People interested in getting rebates must remove at least 250 square feet of turf.

More information about the rebate program is at www.SoCalWaterSmart.com, and the water district's coverage area is shown at www.westbasin.org.
