Historic Malibu Business Known For Helping Those In Need Gets Eviction Notice

MALIBU (CBSLA.com) — A historic Malibu business is on the verge of being history after receiving an eviction notice.

Started in the 1970s, the Artifac Tree Thrift Store on Cross Creek Road has less than two months now to leave.

"The way I see it, it's almost like a recycling of love," said Martha Templeton in describing the store that was started after the Malibu fires to help victims who lost everything. "Underneath these trees and underneath all this shade, it's a special place."

Proceeds from the sale of the donated merchandise go to helping those in need of help.

The thrift shop in the past has paid for drug rehabilitation and given bus passes, gas money, shoes and clothes. They've even helped people get into homes.

"They gave me a blanket when it was cold when I first got here and clothes," said one man.

But the shop filled with furniture, shoes, clothes, appliances, books, and dishes among other items has been served a 60-day eviction notice.

Templeton, though, said if she has to leave the shop, her biggest concern is the people they help. Last year alone, the store gave $100,000 away, not counting the items they gave away.

"Really, no one gets turned away. She's really the heart and soul of the Artifac Tree," said Sandy Milken.

Many shoppers have just heard the store is scheduled to close.

Attorneys are negotiating with the family that owns the property, but they've been told there's a new tenant. Finding a new spot could prove difficult, if not impossible.

"Every day is a new person you can help. Every day is a new story that you can be part of and you make it better for them," Templeton said.

The store must leave the location by Aug. 16.

CBS2 reached out to the Mariposa Land Co. that served the eviction notice but has not heard back from the company.
