Angels Pull Shoemaker From Start, Recall Heaney From Minors
ANAHEIM (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have made a pitching change for their series finale against the Houston Astros, recalling left-hander Andrew Heaney from Triple-A Salt Lake to make his sixth major league start instead of struggling Matt Shoemaker.
Heaney is making his Angels debut Wednesday. He was 0-3 with a 6.93 ERA in five starts last season with the Miami Marlins.
Shoemaker is being given a couple of extra days to work on fastball command. He is penciled in to start Friday night against Seattle.
Los Angeles acquired the 24-year-old Heaney, drafted ninth overall in 2012, from the Dodgers in December for second baseman Howie Kendrick.
Heaney's promotion fills the roster spot vacated by outfielder Alfredo Marte, optioned to Salt Lake after a 13-3 loss Tuesday night.
Shoemaker, who set a franchise rookie record last season with 16 wins, is 4-5 with a 5.20 ERA and 15 home runs allowed in 13 starts — including a 6-5 loss to the Astros at home on May 9, when he gave up six runs and three homers in three innings.
The right-hander has allowed at least five earned runs in four of his starts, something he did only once in 20 starts in 2014.
