Father Of 3 Fatally Shot On Father's Day After Off-Roading Fight

HESPERIA (CBSLA.com) — A local family's Father's Day celebration turned to tragedy when a man was shot and killed in an apparent off-roading fight.

Steve Bangs, 43, of Hesperia was shot and killed on Father's Day in Deep Creek in the high desert. He leaves behind three sons.

"I can't believe it. It's hard to believe," Bangs' mother Lolita said. "I expect him to walk in the back door anytime."

Bangs was spending time with friends in the creek, riding an all-terrain vehicle, when a fight broke out. Lolita says that a child in a stroller was hit by someone riding an ATV, and her son went to help, resulting in an argument.

"He got in his truck and started running, and they were shooting at him, (and) hit him in the back bumper," Lolita recalled. "There was a bullet hole. They shot him through the back bumper and shot him in the back of the head."

While investigators did not confirm what had led up to the deadly confrontation, they say Bangs did not know his killer or killers. The Bangs say there were as many as 200 people in the area at the time of the fatal shooting.

Detectives continue to interview and look for witnesses and the killer or killers remain on the loose.
