"With technology continuing to support both new and traditional modes of media in today's society, artists can apply their creative skill sets to multiple fields and industries," said Rita Soultanian, Director of Career Services at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). "Paired with technical abilities, our graduates' innovative problem solving skills are valuable in L.A.'s job market, which shows an increase in jobs spanning from the green sector to technology startups."

How is CalArts readying the next wave of artists?

"In order to educate creative professionals for 21st century careers, many of our graduate level programs offer supplemental integrated media curricula, and undergraduates have the option of a digital arts minor, where they can explore the integration of technology and their art form."

What defines a marketable artist?

"Effective multimedia artists have the ability to think outside of the box and communicate their message across a variety of media platforms. They are valued in professional settings, ranging from non-profits and entertainment to business and even governmental organizations."

How can artists secure a sound position in this vocation?

"With traditional and online courses, it's become easier to acquire technical skills to expand your horizons. When combined with creative thinking, this can help enhance one's chosen art form or professional practice. CalArts remains diligent in its effort to help aspiring artists maximize their full potential."

What is your message to endeavoring artists?

"Companies are looking for individuals who can adapt to their environment and innovate under varying circumstances. Rather than focusing on just one area of strength, the ability to apply effective communication, problem solving, leadership, out-of-the-box thinking, and other transferable skills will provide an additional professional edge."
