Police Shoot Armed Suspect During El Monte Pursuit

EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — A police pursuit in El Monte ended early Friday with officers shooting the suspect.

The chase started around 1:30 a.m. at 94th and Central in Southeast Los Angeles.

The 25-year-old man was in a white minivan that he continued to drive despite losing a rear tire, which sent sparks flying.

The suspect sped from officers through side streets and alleyways.

He waved a gun from the window, pointing it at police and, at times, towards his own head.

It dragged on for two hours before the driver got out of his car in El Monte with the gun in his hand, the LAPD reports.

Officers fired back and the man fell to the ground.

"He had his hands up and he had the gun to his hand. Right when the officers saw the gun outside the car they opened fire on him," witness Roman Alvarez said.

The driver was transported to a hospital and his condition is not yet known.

Police believe the man, wanted on suspicion of felony domestic violence, was driving under the influence.
