Man Suspected In Fatal Hit-And-Run In Echo Park Reported He Was The Victim

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A man has been arrested in the hit-and-run death of a 15-year-old boy in Echo Park, police said Monday.

Sang Won Jung, 26, of Tujunga was taken into custody on Saturday and booked on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, Los Angeles police officials said.

Jung was released Sunday on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to make his first court appearance on July 9.

Christian Donis was pronounced dead about 1 p.m. Sunday at a hospital, coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter said.

The teen was skateboarding with his 13-year-old cousin about 10 p.m. Friday when they were struck by an SUV while crossing westbound in an unmarked crosswalk on Alvarado Street at the intersection of Montrose Street, LAPD Sgt. Jesse Garcia.

His cousin suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital by family members, police said. One of the boys tried to pull the other back before they were both struck by the SUV, and the crash broke one of their skateboards in half, according to reports from the scene.

According to the LAPD, Jung went to a police station to report that he had been the victim of a hit-and-run and wanted to file a report.

Officers at the station noticed that Jung's vehicle "matched the description of the hit-and-run (vehicle) involving two teenage victims," according to the statement. "Detectives from the Central Traffic Division responded to the (police) station, and concluded that Mr. Jung had been behind the wheel when the two teenage victims were struck."
