Crews Fully Contain 32-Acre Brush Fire Near 5 Freeway In Castaic

CASTAIC (CBSLA.com/AP) — Officials say a brush fire broke out near the 5 Freeway north of Castaic, causing temporary lane closures on the busy freeway.

A dispatch supervisor with the Los Angeles County Fire Department says the blaze started around 3 p.m. near where northbound and southbound lanes of the highway cross Saturday afternoon and scorched 32 acres.

Winds fanned the flames up a hill and toward a freeway guardrail, prompting the California Highway Patrol to order the lane closures on both sides of the freeway. Traffic was backed up for miles.

Firefighters contained the fire in about three hours.

There were no injuries or structural damage.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.

Castaic is about 45 miles north of L.A. The portion of freeway affected by the fire is at the beginning of the uphill climb toward the Grapevine mountain pass.
