9-Month-Old Infant Drowns In OC Family's Pool
IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — A 9-month-old drowned in the family's backyard swimming pool after managing to slip away from its mother, Orange County fire officials said Sunday.
The mother discovered the child submerged in the water around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at their home in the 5000 block of Carver. She attempted CPR before paramedics arrived on the scene and transferred the child to Hoag Hospital, OC Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said.
The child, whose name and gender were not released, was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
Concialdi said it appeared that the family's German Shepherd tried to pull the child from the water, but was unsuccessful.
The drowning marks the seventh child to drown in Orange County within the past 30 days, Concialdi said. Out of 25 suspected drowning calls in 2015, 14 have reportedly been fatal.
The department handled 86 such calls in 2014, including 43 that were fatal.
Orange County has "an abundance" of backyard swimming pools, but many of them are not protected by isolation fences with locks and other barriers to keep children safe.
