Man Fatally Shot Following Argument In Hawthorne; Suspect Arrested

HAWTHORNE (CBSLA.com) — Deputies Tuesday arrested a man in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred in Hawthorne.

Officers were sent shortly after 1:30 a.m. to the 13000 block of South Prairie Avenue near 134th Street for report of a shooting, according to the Hawthorne Police Department.

Paramedics with the Los Angeles County Fire Department said they were also sent to the scene for a shooting victim, but did not transport a victim.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detectives were also sent to the scene to assist in the investigation.

Police explained an adult man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Shortly after 8 a.m., police closed Prairie Avenue between 132nd and 136th streets, and Jefferson Avenue at 134th Street. Schools in the area were not affected by the homicide investigation.

A preliminary investigation revealed the victim went with a woman to see a man who lives in the apartment complex.

At one point, the woman got into an argument with the suspect, who then proceeded to shoot at the victim as he ran out of the building.

"Some argument or altercation occurred at his apartment complex," explained LASD Lt. Dave Coleman. "He produced a rifle and fired."

The victim eventually collapsed on a sidewalk where he died.

Authorities taped off a second crime scene just a few blocks away, however, it remains unclear if both crime scenes are related to one another.

According to detectives, a man was arrested on a murder charge in connection with the deadly shooting near the apartment complex. Officials have not yet released his identity.

"It appears he drove his car away from the location," added Coleman. "He was detained as he walked away from it."

Officers explained the suspect's vehicle will be searched for evidence.

Police said they believe they have recovered the murder weapon at the scene. The motive for the shooting, however, remains under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
