Dodgers Hand Padres 3rd Straight Loss
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Andrew Cashner matched Zack Greinke pitch-for-pitch through six innings. The San Diego Padres just couldn't deliver a victory.
Cashner allowed just an unearned run and five hits while striking out three and walking one for his first no-decision of the season in the Padres' 2-1 loss Friday night. His 12 unearned runs lead the majors.
"We've wasted a lot of his outings," former Dodger Matt Kemp said. "We need to score him some runs and make it a little more comfortable for him. He's been pitching some good baseball."
The Padres tied the game 1-all in the seventh on Will Venable's RBI single that scored Derek Norris, who had a ground-rule double. The Dodgers unsuccessfully challenged after Norris was called safe sliding home when it appeared his right leg went over the top of the plate without touching it.
"I thought I located my fastball better," Cashner said. "I hit my spots, had my slider going and didn't make a whole lot of mistakes. I tried to elevate more with my fastball on two strikes, and they just nicked a few balls that were up. Some of them were good fastballs, but some of them that I was going for swings and missed on they just got a piece of them."
Joc Pederson homered off an 0-2 pitch with one out in the eighth inning to end the Dodgers' three-game skid. His 11th homer came off Joaquin Benoit (4-2).
"He tried to get the ball away and elevate it, and it just didn't get there," Padres manager Bud Black said. "Joaquin's been very good for a very long time, and today he got beat by a mistake pitch to a young man with a big swing."
Chris Hatcher (1-0) earned his first major league win in his fifth season in the big leagues, all as a reliever. Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth to earn his second save.
It was the Dodgers' eighth one-run victory over the Padres at home since June 3, 2013.
Andre Ethier's RBI double gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the fifth and snapped their streak of 35 consecutive scoreless innings, which tied a franchise record set from Sept. 28-Oct. 2, 1962. The Dodgers were coming off getting swept in three shutout games at San Francisco
Dodgers starter Zack Greinke allowed six hits and one run in 7 2/3 innings, struck out five and walked one. The right-hander has given up three earned runs in his last four starts.
