Stolen Vehicle Suspect In Custody Following Pursuit, Police Stand-Off In Bassett

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police arrested a stolen vehicle suspect Tuesday following a pursuit through the San Gabriel Valley that ended with a stand-off in Bassett.

The chase began when police received a report of a stolen black pick-up and began tracking it with vehicle recovery system LoJack.

The suspect could be seen driving erratically on surface streets through El Monte and Baldwin Park around 8 p.m.

At one point the driver hit the back of another vehicle and could be seen speeding through intersections and on the wrong side of the road as SKY9 was overhead.

The suspect traveled onto the eastbound 10 Freeway and continued onto southbound 605 Freeway around 8:14 p.m. He exited onto Valley Boulevard shortly after, continuing onto surface streets at high speeds.

The driver stopped the vehicle in a residential neighborhood in Bassett around 8:17 p.m. and fled on foot, entering the backdoor of a residence.

Baldwin Park police set up a perimeter and called a K-9 unit to the scene.

It was a frightening moment for members of the family inside the home, who said they were watching a movie when they heard police yelling to come out with their hands up.

"They were here for probably about 20 minutes but we never imagined it was our house. They never said a thing," said Elpidio Gonzalez. "All we started seeing [were] more and more patrol cars. And the helicopter ... until they said, 'Come with your hands up.' And that's when I looked out the window."

The suspect was apprehended shortly before 9 p.m.

Police say he will face a charge of felony evading arrest as well as other charges.
