Angels Pitchers Struggle In 10-6 Loss To Jays

TORONTO (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels have been struggling to score runs lately. On Monday, they were struggling to prevent them.

Jose Bautista homered and drove in three runs as the Toronto Blue Jays ended a five-game slide, beating the Angels 10-6.

Los Angeles gave up 17 hits, one shy of its season high, and surrendered a season-high 10 runs, the most they'd allowed since last Sept. 19. They permitted more runs Monday than they had in their last six games combined (9).

"On the pitching side this is probably our worst game of the year," manager Mike Scioscia said.

Albert Pujols, David Freese and Chris Iannetta hit solo homers for the Angels, who lost their second straight after winning the previous five.

Bautista, Donaldson and Russell Martin, who had a go-ahead single in the sixth inning, each finished with three hits for Toronto.

"The meat of their order is a tough four or five guys to navigate if you're not commanding the zone," Angels catcher Chris Iannetta said.

Los Angeles came in having scored three runs or fewer in 21 of 37 games, including seven of their past nine.

In a bid to shake things up, the Angels moved leadoff man Kole Calhoun into the cleanup spot and put Erick Aybar at the top of the order. Scioscia said he made the move because he wanted a more productive batter behind Pujols. Aybar and Calhoun each finished 1 for 5.

The Angels were upset at former AL West foe Josh Donaldson, who yelled profanities at pitching coach Mike Butcher from the Toronto dugout during a testy exchange in the sixth.

After striking out, Donaldson was caught on camera yelling at Butcher, apparently upset that the Angels had argued about the strike zone during his at bat.

"I played against these guys for a long time, they know the competitor that I am," Donaldson said. "I think we just got caught up in the heat of the moment."

Butcher called Donaldson's outburst "classless."

Scioscia came out and complained to home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez after the exchange.

"A lot of guys in our dugout took exception to (Donaldson) yelling," Scioscia said. "We weren't even talking to him. We were talking to the umpire."

Both sided denied any bad blood dating to Donaldson's time in Oakland, where he spent his first five seasons.

Los Angeles had not given up more than three runs in any of its past six games, but fell behind 4-0 in the second as the Blue Jays got six straight hits against C.J. Wilson. Wilson allowed four runs and a season-worst 10 hits in five innings.

A crowd of 29,306 watched at the Rogers Centre on Victoria Day, a Canadian holiday since the mid-1800s that celebrates Queen Victoria's birthday.

After Toronto loaded the bases in the sixth against Mike Morin (1-1), Martin's two-run single on a full-count pitch from Vinnie Pestano made it 6-5.

"He did a great job staying on that pitch," Iannetta said of Martin. "It was a tough pitch on the black away."

Danny Valencia followed with a two-run double.

Roberto Osuna (1-0) worked 1 2-3 innings for his first major league win.

The Angels took a 5-4 lead with two in the top of the sixth off Ryan Tepera. Freese hit a leadoff homer and Johnny Giavotella added an RBI single.

TROUT STUCK IN SLUMP

Angels OF Mike Trout was 0 for 5 with two strikeouts, extending a 4 for 25 slump.

HAVE A DRINK ON ME

In the fourth, Angels DH Marc Krauss fouled a ball into the seats behind third base, where it knocked a tray of drinks out of the hands of a stadium vendor.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Angels: Matt Joyce was scratched from the lineup and replaced by Krauss at DH.

UP NEXT

Angels: LHP Hector Santiago (2-2, 2.41) pitches Tuesday at Toronto. He's coming off his first win in four starts, allowing one run over seven innings in a victory over Colorado. He's allowed one earned run or fewer in four of seven starts this season.

Blue Jays: RHP Aaron Sanchez (3-3, 4.26) allowed a career-worst five runs in a May 13 loss at Baltimore, losing for the first time since April 16.
