Protesters Demand To See Surveillance Video Of Deadly Police Shooting In Venice

VENICE (CBSLA.com) — Angry community members met Saturday in Venice Beach to protest the police and demand that they release security camera video of the shooting.

The protest happened at the site of Tuesday's fatal confrontation, at Pacific and Windward avenues, between two officers and a homeless man.

"Stop the violence nationwide - I'm saying that straight up," one man said at the gathering, which drew Venice residents and activists.

Friends of slain 19-year-old Brendon Glenn say he was unarmed and didn't deserve to die.

"How could they do that without trying like a Taser. There were two officers, they could have both done other things," Avalon Rutledge said.

A person who dealt with Glenn at a nearby homeless shelter says the New York native struggled with drug and alcohol addictions.

A friend said Glenn had been drinking heavily the night he was shot.

Police say they may identify the officer who shot him as early as Monday. He and his partner are on administrative leave during the investigation.

"He should be charged with murder, because it wasn't justified, and he killed Brendon," Rutledge said.

The LAPD says the public shouldn't expect to ever see the surveillance footage of the shooting unless there's a lawsuit or the bar owner elects to release it. After seeing that video, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck said he was "very concerned" by the shooting.

A Venice resident told CBS2/KCAL9's Greg Mills, "It doesn't look good for the LAPD."
