Pasadena Police Officer Charged With Insurance Fraud Over 'Ice Bucket Challenge' Video

PASADENA (CBSLA.com) — A Pasadena police officer who lifted a 5-gallon bucket of water to take part in a "Ice Bucket Challenge" despite claiming she had a lower-back injury has been charged with insurance fraud, according to prosecutors.

Officer Jaime Robison pleaded not guilty Friday to four counts of insurance fraud for exaggerating injuries on two occasion to collect disability benefits, according to Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Arunas Sodonis of the Healthcare Fraud Division.

In one instance, Robison received disability benefits during the same period of time as when she appeared on a video posted online in July 2014 that allegedly showed her taking part in an "Ice Bucket Challenge," where she allegedly picked up a 5-gallon bucket containing ice water and poured it on a fellow officer, Sodonis said.

Robison is also accused of insurance fraud in 2012 when she received disability pay for more than a year, according to Sodonis.

Prosecutors are estimating total taxpayer losses could be as much as $117,000.

If convicted as charged, Robison faces up to more than six years in state prison to be served in county jail.

She is scheduled to return to court June 10.
