Irvine Police Make Third Arrest For Copper Wire Theft In A Week

IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — A man faces charges of stealing copper wire from light posts in Irvine, police said Tuesday.

Armando Arroyo, 38, was booked on charges of grand theft and conspiracy to commit grand theft Monday and is being held on $20,000 bail. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday.

Police say a City of Irvine landscape contractor saw two men on bicycles Monday at about 12:30 p.m. stealing copper wire from light posts along the bike path between Jeffrey Road and Sand Canyon Avenue on the south side of the 405 Freeway.

Officers responding to the area found one of the suspects, later identified as Arroyo. His vehicle was located in a nearby shopping center and copper wire and burglary tools were found in the car, according to Irvine police spokeswoman Farrah Emami.

The second suspect remains at large.

There have been at least two copper wire theft-related arrests earlier this week, Emami said.

Anyone with information about Arroyo or the second suspect's identity can call Irvine police Detective Ramon Lerma at (949) 724-7233.
