Long Beach High School Student Accepted To 7 Of 8 Ivy League Schools

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Nicholas Negrete started out as an average student, but now he holds acceptance letters from some of the most prestigious universities in the country.

The 17-year-old senior from Saint Anthony High in Long Beach has been accepted to 20 top ranked universities, including USC, UCLA, UC Berkeley, the University of Chicago and seven out of the eight Ivy League schools.

Duke was the only university Nick applied to that rejected him, and only because he thinks he rushed through their application.

"I've never cured cancer, I don't have a perfect SAT score, but I feel really honored that these colleges have chosen me," Nick said.

Most Ivy League schools accept only 3 percent of thousands of applicants. Nicholas' seven Ivy League acceptance letters are almost unheard of.

"He's a fantastic student," said Cassie Aschinger, Nick's English teacher for the last three years. She says she knows exactly what separated him from the rest of the pack.

"He goes above and beyond to make sure he masters whatever he sets out to do," Aschinger said.

So with the proverbial pick of the litter, where does Nick plan to go? He says since he was waitlisted at Harvard, he will attend Stanford, with a double major of math and English and an ultimate goal of being a writer.
