Woman In Wheelchair Fatally Struck By Driver In Lancaster

LANCASTER (CBSLA.com)  —  Authorities said a woman who was riding in an electric wheelchair Saturday evening was fatally struck by a driver in Lancaster.

The accident occurred just before 8 p.m. on Sierra Highway near Avenue 3-2, said Sgt. Mike Fredericks of the Sheriff's Lancaster Station.

The motorist was reportedly going south in the right lane of Sierra Highway when the woman in the wheelchair, also in the traffic lane, was struck, Fredericks said.

"The driver of the vehicle immediately stopped and requested emergency aid," the sergeant said.

He also said speed and/or alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident.

"Why a woman in a wheelchair (was) in the number two lane period is in question," Fredericks said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
