UPDATED STORY (4/3/15 – 10:50am):

LOS ANGELES (CBS Local/AP) — Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig say they are now abandoning plans for a Lifetime TV movie after the secret project became public.

Lifetime had confirmed news reports Thursday that the former “Saturday Night Live” stars would play a couple who befriend a pregnant woman in hopes of adopting her child in the ominously titled “A Deadly Adoption” for the network’s 25th anniversary.

The actors quickly issued a statement that they were disappointed word got out. Ferrell and Wiig said they decided it’s best to forego the project they labeled “top secret.”

Earlier, Lifetime said the movie had already been taped and was being kept under wraps with plans to air it this summer. The network didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on Ferrell and Wiig’s statement.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Think of the two most random people to put in a Lifetime made-for-TV movie and chances are SNL alums Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig fall pretty low on the list.

However, news from The Hollywood Reporter states that the two will star in a Lifetime TV movie this summer titled “A Deadly Adoption” alongside “90210” star Jessica Lowndes.

The idea is just as hilarious and weird as it sounds, and there’s a good chance this could be your new favorite cult comedy classic.

The film, which has already been shot, follows Ferrell and Wiig as a married couple who take care of the woman pregnant with the baby they’re adopting. Things get more campy and complicated when their plans don’t play out as they originally thought they would.

Will Ferrell will executive produce the film with his longtime collaborator and former SNL writer Adam McKay. The two are notorious for their comedic partnerships, creating movies such as “Anchorman,” “Talledega Nights,” and “Step Brothers.”

This is also a reunion of sorts for Ferrell and Wiigs whose last time starring together was in the miniseries “The Spoils of Babylon,” another campy take on a genre.

“A Deadly Adoption” will join  Lifetime’s other greats like “A Daughter’s Nightmare” and “Memories of Murder” when it premieres this summer as a part of Lifetime’s 25th anniversary.
