Police Fatally Shoot Man In Wilmington

WILMINGTON (CBSLA.com) — The LAPD reports officers fatally shot a man while responding to an incident Thursday in the South Bay.

It happened around 9:20 a.m. in the 1500 block of Bayview Avenue, in Wilmington, the LAPD reports.

Detective Meghan Aguilar indicated a shooting involving an officer took place after a confrontation with a man in his 30s.

"Officers responded to a call of an attempt suicide. The comments of the radio call indicated that the individual was armed with a knife," she said.

The detective could not confirm whether the man confronted officers with the knife but said an investigation is ongoing.

A spokesperson for L.A. City Fire Department says they were called to the location after being notified a stabbing had taken place.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbor David Nunez believes the man who died had a history of mental illness.

"In the past, he did have mental issues. He did try to commit suicide when he was around 15 - 15 to 18," Nunez said.

Members of the man's family refused to comment on his medical history.

Officers involved have been removed from the field pending a review by the chief.
