Thousands Of CicLAvia Participants Ride Into The Valley

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — For the first time ever on Sunday, CicLAvia offered thousands of pedestrians and bicyclists the opportunity to explore the San Fernando Valley.

Participants of all ages took advantage of road closures to explore nearly six miles of car-free streets in Studio City and North Hollywood.

"This is our first time in the Valley and it is by no means our last," said CicLAvia Co-founder and Executive Director Aaron Paley. "We plan on making our spring slot an annual exploration of different parts of the great San Fernando Valley."

The event spanned along Lankershim Boulevard, between the North Hollywood Metro Red Line stop at Chandler Boulevard, and the Universal City/Studio City Red Line stop.

Participants will also traveled along Ventura Boulevard, between Campo de Caguenga and Coldwater Canyon.

Authorities said the route highlighted the North Hollywood Arts District, Universal City, Campo de Cahuenga, the Los Angeles River, the Studio City Farmers Market and dozens of local businesses.

Officials shut down Lankershim Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard to traffic at 8:00 a.m. in preparation for the arrival of participants.

The event began at 9:00 a.m., and was expected to finish at 4:00 p.m., authorities explained.

CicLAvia is a non-profit organization that provides active transportation and good health through public spaces on car-free streets.

According to event coordinators, funding for the routes were provided by Metro as part of a $4 million open streets grant.

Other CicLAvia events will be held this year in Pasadena, Culver City, and the heart of Los Angeles.
