Tense Hyde Park Barricade Situation Ends With Suspect Taken Into Custody

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A barricade situation that began in Hyde Park around 9 am. Sunday, has ended with the arrest of the suspect just after 4 p.m.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officials were sent to a home, located in the 5800 block of 8th Avenue, for report of man that barricaded himself inside the residence.

Officers said the suspect was possibly under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to police, the man held his son hostage within the home. The unidentified suspect released the boy to police shortly after 2:00 p.m.

The boy was taken to stay with extended family and is fine, reported CBS2's Greg Mills.

It was unclear if the man was armed with any weapons but he reportedly told police he did.

Just after 4 p.m., the suspect was taken into custody by SWAT officers.

It all began when police were dispatched to the area from a report about the suspect allegedly smashing windows.

Neighbors in the area told Mills that around 10 people -- six adults and four children -- ive in the home, which police tend to frequent.

Longtime neighbor Mike Davidson said it's a mixture of foster kids and biological kids. "It's definitely a foster house."

The man has custody of  the son who was being held hostage, and lives inside the garage of the home, according to neighbors.

Authorities evacuated residents in the area, and secured their safety away from the barricade situation.

Officials have not yet clarified if the man is wanted in connection to committing a crime; however, they have confirmed he has a criminal record.

No injuries were reported.

The suspect faces child endangerment charges. Officials told Mills, they hoped the man would seek help.
