L.A. Is Covered By An Army Of Computer Support Specialists

In recent years, the number of sophisticated attacks against computer systems has grown, and many companies are still behind in their abilities to detect these invasions. That's why the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects to see nearly 28,000 additional information security analysts to have already landed employment nationwide by 2022.

Aiding in the war against cyber terrorism is an expanding army of computer support specialists, whose function is to ensure that networks are running properly. In the coming years, as many as 123,000 newly-minted wizards across the country will be locked and loaded to develop solutions posthaste when problems occur. Brian McGinn is one of them.

"When I was 14, I built my first computer," said McGinn, a newly recruited engineer at Computer Solutions Group, Inc. "Ever since, I knew I wanted to work with computers and be a part of the technology world where things are always changing."

How did you land the job?

"I feel that both my knowledge about computer systems and my passion for helping others with technology solutions are apparent when interviewing me. Those attributes fell in line perfectly."

What has on-the-job training taught you?

"One of my first assignments was assisting a company, whose ability to function was on the line. I learned more about being a technical engineer the first few times behind a computer than I ever did in a lab or classroom."

How are you preparing for a sustainable career in this field?

"I plan to continue the never-ending educational cycle around technology, and remain open to new situations and opportunities that may grant me exposure to those technologies."

Where do you see yourself in 2022?

"In seven years, I see myself growing in this industry, expanding my knowledge of platforms, devices and new technology, and using that knowledge in as productive a way as possible."

What is your message to emerging computer support specialists?

"When you are starting out in this profession, remember that no job is too small and nothing is too trivial to learn. You should create and cultivate professional relationships and maintain a healthy work and life balance."
