SWAT Team Takes Santa Monica Suspect Into Custody

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA.com) — Following a more than four-hour standoff, a man who had barricaded himself in a Santa Monica apartment unit surrendered to police Saturday afternoon.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, SWAT team members were sent around 12:32 p.m. to the 800 block of Ocean Park Boulevard to assist authorities with a barricaded suspect.

Just before 5 p.m., with a police dog pulling at his pants, the shirtless man exited the apartment. CBS2's Laurie Perez said a crowd that had gathered during the afternoon standout let out a gasp as police took the suspect in handcuffs behind an armored vehicle.

About a half hour before the suspect surrendered, two people who live below the unit where the man was barricaded were brought out, Perez reported. They had been stuck in their unit since before 11 a.m.

It was still unclear what prompted the situation. The Sheriff's Department confirmed Saturday evening that the man, whose name has not been released, is a suspect in a slaying that took place in the 8000 block of Vermont Avenue on Feb. 10.

The nearby intersection of Ocean Park and Lincoln boulevards was closed much over the afternoon, but was reopened before nightfall.

No further information is available at this time.
